Best Wine Refrigerators

Looking to buy a wine refrigerator?

Not sure where to start?

What features on your new wine refrigerator will you need and want?

There are several things to consider when purchasing a new wine refrigerator.

The first area to consider is whether you would like an under counter model or a freestanding model.

The best wine refrigerators are ones that fit your needs and wants. This is the most important point to keep in mind.

Under counter models tend to be higher in price than the freestanding models are, but they tend to give a more uniform look to the area in which they are placed. Most people do not have a dedicated wine room for entertaining, so the likely place for a under counter model is in the kitchen.

Freestanding models are generally less expensive. They can be put anywhere you have the space and an electrical outlet. Size is usually not an issue when purchasing a freestanding wine refrigerator, as counter height and width don't dictate which wine chiller to purchase.

How much wine are you planning to store?

Storage capacity is another consideration. Chances are if your looking to purchase a wine refrigerator, you probably have more than a few bottles. Ask yourself, do I buy wine by the case or a bottle at a time? Case buyers are generally going to need a larger wine fridge that by the bottle buyers.

Are you planning to store white wine, red wine, or both?

All wine refrigerators have a temperature control specific to the type of wine, red or white, that is going to be stored. Many newer refrigerators have temperature controls for both red and white to be stored together. Choosing how many zones of cooling will be needed may influence your decision as to which model to purchase and find the best wine refrigerator for your needs.

Temperature consistency is also something to consider.

Uniformity, as is it sometimes called, refers to the refrigerators ability to maintain a consistent temperature and sometimes humidity levels so that your wine is always stored properly. Wine can degrade when stored in a spot with wide temperature swings.

How does the unit compensate to room temperature changes?

If your wine refrigerator is not going to installed in the interior of a home, where a consistent temp is usually maintained, but rather on a porch or in a garage; then the units ability to compensate for weather extremes and keep the wine cool should be considered.

Energy consumption may also be a factor in your choice of which wine chiller to purchase. Wine refrigerators are not energy star rated and therefore most rate a fair grade in energy efficiency.
